Career Consultants

Career Consultants are a totally different kettle of fish.  There are some very well established Career Consultants, and they advertise their services, most weeks, in publications like the Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph.  They have large databases of clients, who register jobs with them.  They also have historic databases of senior contacts across commerce and industry.

The Career Consultants tend to work in the higher remuneration brackets.  Want to know why?  Well, it’s simple.  They don’t charge the client for the placement, they charge you.  What they do is take a brief from you as to what sort of job you would like.  They do this at a very formal initial meeting where they will put together and agree a job search program that is designed specifically for you.

Executive Consultants

Having put a program together, they will then tell you how much it is going to cost you.  So, there you have the reason they only work in the higher salary ranges.  It is because it is only highly paid people that can afford to go to a Career Consultant.

They do have some advantages.  For example, the search program is tailored specifically for you.  They can also effect introductions to companies of special interest where you have no contacts.  However, they are expensive.  If you are unsure, get a brochure or speak to one of them on the ‘phone.  Most have local call or freephone numbers on which to contact them.

Be careful though, they are skilled salespeople, and you may find yourself signing on the dotted line before you know it.  Once they start the program for you, you are bound to pay.  So the maxim is, make sure you definitely want to use this route before you sign up.  Having said that, if you do put your job search in the hands of a Career Consultant, they will do virtually everything for you, so there is another major benefit!
